Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Why can sulphuric acid not be used in Paper chromatography but can be used in TLC for development of chromatogram

Accepted Answer

Paper chromatography uses water as the mobile phase, which would react with concentrated sulfuric acid, causing the paper to char and the chromatogram to be destroyed. TLC, on the other hand, uses a nonpolar solvent as the mobile phase, which does not react with sulfuric acid.
