The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between lithium hydroxide and cobalt(II) nitrate is:
2LiOH + Co(NO3)2 → Co(OH)2 + 2LiNO3
From the equation, we can see that 2 moles of LiOH react with 1 mole of Co(NO3)2 to produce 1 mole of Co(OH)2.
The number of moles of LiOH in 75.0 mL of a 0.650 mol/L solution is:
(0.650 mol/L) x (75.0 mL/1000 mL/L) = 0.04875 mol
Since Co(NO3)2 is in excess, all of the LiOH will react to form Co(OH)2. Therefore, the number of moles of Co(OH)2 produced is also 0.04875 mol.
The molar mass of Co(OH)2 is 92.96 g/mol. Therefore, the mass of Co(OH)2 produced is:
(0.04875 mol) x (92.96 g/mol) = 4.53 g
Therefore, the mass of precipitate produced is 4.53 g.
