Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Are any new pi bonds formed from diels alder reaction or is the pi bond simply regenerated

Accepted Answer

In a Diels-Alder reaction, two new sigma bonds are formed, and the pi bond in the dienophile is converted into a new sigma bond. The pi system of the diene is rearranged to form a new sigma bond and a new pi bond in the cyclic product. So, while the original pi bond in the dienophile is not regenerated, a new pi bond is formed in the product.
