Cracking is a process of breaking down larger straight-chain hydrocarbons into smaller branched-chain hydrocarbons or a mixture of smaller hydrocarbons. It is done by applying heat or pressure, or both, in the presence or absence of a catalyst. Cracking may be used as a means of producing gasoline from larger hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum or tar, or it may be a side reaction associated with polymerization processes.
