Digestion is a complex biochemical process that involves breaking down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body. It starts in the mouth with mechanical digestion (chewing) and chemical digestion by salivary amylase (breaking down starch). The food then travels to the stomach where it is churned and mixed with gastric juices containing pepsin (protein digestion) and hydrochloric acid (acidic environment). Next, the partially digested food enters the small intestine where enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver aid in further digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Absorption of nutrients occurs primarily in the small intestine through the villi and microvilli. Finally, undigested material passes into the large intestine for water reabsorption and elimination as feces.
