Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Discuss about solution and colloidal state

Accepted Answer
Solution:
* Is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components.
* Components are mixed in molecular level of dispersion, hence are called true solutions.
* Particle size * Don't scatter light. Examples: Salt dissolved in water.

Colloidal State:
* Colloids are heterogeneous mixtures.
* Colloids are formed when solute particles are dispersed in a solvent and intermediate size range of 1 nm to 1000 nm.
* Colloidal particles are bigger than molecules but they are smaller than suspension particles. They exhibit 'Tyndall effect' i.e. they scatter a beam of light passing through them and become visible.
* Examples are milk, mayonnaise, fog, jelly, etc.
