## SCN- Lewis Structure, Geometry, and Polarity
1. Lewis Structure:
Total Valence Electrons: S (6) + C (4) + N (5) + 1 (negative charge) = 16
Connecting Atoms: S-C-N
Octet Rule: Complete the octets of each atom by adding lone pairs and multiple bonds.
[Image of Lewis Structure: S=C=N with a single lone pair on S and two lone pairs on N]
2. Molecular Geometry:
Central Atom: Carbon (C)
Electron Groups: Two double bonds and no lone pairs on the central carbon.
Electron Geometry: Linear
Molecular Geometry: Linear
3. Hybridization:
The central carbon atom has two electron groups, resulting in sp hybridization.
4. Polarity:
SCN- is a polar molecule. While the carbon-sulfur and carbon-nitrogen bonds are both polar, the molecule is linear. The polarities of the bonds do not cancel out, resulting in a net dipole moment.
