A hydride generation system in AAS reduces analyte elements (As, Se, Ge, Sn & Pb) to their volatile hydride forms. This is achieved by treating the sample with sodium borohydride (NaBH4) in a strongly alkaline medium. The resulting hydrides are then swept by an inert carrier gas into a heated quartz tube, where they are atomized and measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
