Ion exchange resins are classified into two main types based on the nature of the functional groups attached to the polymer matrix:
1). Cation exchange resins: These resins contain negatively charged functional groups, such as sulfonic acid (-SO3H) or carboxylic acid (-COOH), which can exchange cations with the surrounding solution.
2). Anion exchange resins: These resins contain positively charged functional groups, such as quaternary ammonium (-NR3+) or amino (-NH2), which can exchange anions with the surrounding solution.
