A thermometer measures temperature by detecting changes in some physical property of a system that is sensitive to temperature. Common types of thermometers include liquid-in-glass thermometers, which measure the volume of a liquid that expands or contracts with temperature; resistance thermometers, which measure the electrical resistance of a metal wire that changes with temperature; and thermocouples, which measure the voltage generated between two dissimilar metals that are joined at one end and subjected to a temperature difference.
