pH and pOH Calculation
pH:
Definition: pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It is defined as the negative logarithm (base 10) of the hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]).
Formula: pH = -log[H+]
pOH:
Definition: pOH is a measure of the hydroxide ion concentration ([OH-]) in a solution.
Formula: pOH = -log[OH-]
Relationship between pH and pOH:
For any aqueous solution at 25°C: pH + pOH = 14
Example:
Let's say you have a solution with a hydrogen ion concentration of 1 x 10^-5 M.
pH Calculation: pH = -log(1 x 10^-5) = 5
pOH Calculation: pOH = 14 - pH = 14 - 5 = 9
