Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Hydroxides and bases

Accepted Answer

Hydroxides are compounds containing the hydroxide ion (OH-), while bases are substances that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water. All hydroxides are bases, but not all bases are hydroxides. For example, ammonia (NH3) is a base, but it does not contain hydroxide ions in its structure. It acts as a base by accepting protons (H+) from water molecules, generating hydroxide ions.
