Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

I'm having trouble isolating methyl cinnamate in methanol. I've been using a liquid liquid extraction with diethyl ether & brine & it works but there's a smell. methyl cinnamate is smells like strawberries but diethyl ether's ether's smell is overpowering it. I've tried boiling off the ether but it still lingers. what solvent has similar solvent properties to diethyl ether with no smell?

Accepted Answer

Dichloromethane (DCM) is a suitable alternative to diethyl ether for liquid-liquid extractions. It has similar solvent properties to diethyl ether, including its ability to dissolve nonpolar organic compounds, but it has a much less pronounced odor.

Boiling point of diethyl ether: 34.6 °C
Boiling point of DCM: 39.6 °C

Other suitable solvents include hexanes and petroleum ether.
