Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Is there any solvent in which isobutanol does not mix, but isobutyl oleate does? or vice versa

Accepted Answer

Isobutanol and isobutyl oleate have different polarities. Isobutanol is a polar alcohol, while isobutyl oleate is a non-polar ester. Therefore, a solvent that is highly polar (like water) would dissolve isobutanol but not isobutyl oleate. Conversely, a non-polar solvent (like hexane) would dissolve isobutyl oleate but not isobutanol.
