Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Polar and non polar solvent

Accepted Answer

Polar solvents usually have a large dipole moment and a partial positive or negative charge on either end of the molecule, whereas nonpolar solvents have an even distribution of electrons and therefore no polarity. Polar solvents can dissolve ionic compounds and other polar molecules well because the solvent molecules can form strong interactions with the solute particles through dipole-dipole interactions. In contrast, nonpolar solvents cannot form these strong interactions and therefore cannot dissolve polar solutes well.
