Separation Techniques
- Filtration: Separates solids from liquids based on particle size. Iron fillings can be filtered out of a copper sulfate solution.
- Centrifugation: Separates particles of different densities by spinning the mixture at high speed. Iron fillings can be separated from copper sulfate solution by centrifugation.
Physical Properties Used for Separation
- Density: The mass of a substance per unit volume. Iron fillings have a higher density than copper sulfate, so they will settle to the bottom of a container when mixed.
- Magnetism: Iron fillings are magnetic, while copper sulfate is not. A magnet can be used to separate iron fillings from copper sulfate solution.
