Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

What observational changes occur when silver nitrate is poured into a saline and hexane mixture?

Accepted Answer

When silver nitrate (AgNO₃) is added to a mixture of saline (NaCl dissolved in water) and hexane, a white precipitate of silver chloride (AgCl) forms. This is due to the following reaction:
AgNO₃(aq) + NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO₃(aq)
The AgCl is insoluble in water and hexane, so it precipitates out as a white solid. The hexane layer will remain unchanged as it is immiscible with water and does not react with silver nitrate. The aqueous layer will turn cloudy due to the formation of the precipitate.
