The pale yellow color of hexaaquamanganese(II) [Mn(H₂O)₆²⁺] arises from the d-d electronic transitions within the manganese(II) ion. Manganese(II) has a d⁵ electronic configuration, and in an octahedral complex like this, the d orbitals split into two sets: the lower energy t₂g set and the higher energy eg set. The pale yellow color results from the absorption of light in the blue-green region of the spectrum as electrons are excited from the t₂g to the eg orbitals.
