Effective nuclear charge

Accepted Answer

"Effective nuclear charge" (Zeff) is the net positive charge experienced by an electron in an atom. It is calculated by subtracting the number of core electrons from the atomic number of the element. The effective nuclear charge increases as you move from left to right across a period and decreases as you move down a group. Increased effective nuclear charge results in a smaller atomic radius and higher ionization energy.
