Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Example of redox reaction occur on both voltaic cell and electrolytic cell. (please provide the example of the reaction with half-cell reaction and the overall reaction)

Accepted Answer
Voltaic Cell

Half-cell reactions:

Anode: Zn(s) → Zn2+(aq) + 2 e-

Cathode: Cu2+(aq) + 2 e- → Cu(s)

Overall reaction:

Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) → Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s)

Electrolytic Cell

Half-cell reactions:

Anode: H2O(l) → O2(g) + 4 H+(aq) + 4 e-

Cathode: 2 H+(aq) + 2 e- → H2(g)

Overall reaction:

2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g)
