Titration is a common laboratory technique used to determine the concentration of a solution. For example, a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) of unknown concentration can be titrated with a solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) of known concentration. The reaction between the two solutions is a neutralization reaction, which can be represented by the following equation:
NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
By adding the HCl solution dropwise to the NaOH solution, the pH of the mixture changes. When the NaOH has been completely neutralized, the pH of the solution will reach a specific value, known as the equivalence point. The volume of HCl added at the equivalence point can be used to calculate the concentration of the NaOH solution.
