Swern oxidation is a chemical reaction used to oxidize alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. The reaction is initiated by the formation of a mixed anhydride between the alcohol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The mixed anhydride then reacts with oxalyl chloride to form an activated species that oxidizes the alcohol to the corresponding carbonyl compound.
