Maleic anhydride is a highly reactive dienophile due to its electron-withdrawing carbonyl groups. These groups create a strong electron-deficient system within the molecule, making it highly susceptible to nucleophilic attack. This makes it an excellent dienophile in Diels-Alder reactions, as it readily reacts with dienes to form cyclic adducts.
