Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

Why is the sky blue?

Accepted Answer

The blue color of the sky is a result of a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. Sunlight, which contains all colors of the visible spectrum, is scattered by molecules in the atmosphere, primarily nitrogen and oxygen. Blue light, with its shorter wavelength, is scattered more effectively than other colors. This scattered blue light reaches our eyes from all directions, making the sky appear blue.
