2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazones (2,4-DNP) are better derivatives than phenylhydrazones for characterizing ketones and aldehydes because they form more crystalline and higher melting point derivatives. This is due to the presence of the electron-withdrawing nitro groups on the 2,4-DNP molecule, which increase the polarity of the derivative and strengthen the intermolecular forces, leading to higher melting points and more easily crystallizable compounds. The stronger intermolecular forces also make the 2,4-DNP derivatives more stable and less soluble in water, making them easier to isolate and purify.
