2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones are generally considered better derivatives for carbonyl compounds than phenylhydrazones because of their higher melting points and increased crystallinity. This is due to the electron-withdrawing nitro groups on the phenyl ring, which make the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone more polar and thus more easily crystallized.
