Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

So im making methyl cinnamate from cinnamic acid and methanol using sulfuric acid as the catalyst. you suggested calcium chloride as a good replacement dehydrator. would calcium chloride react to any of the chemicals in the vial?

Accepted Answer

Calcium chloride should not react with any of the chemicals in the vial. It is a drying agent and will help to remove water from the reaction mixture, which will drive the reaction to the product side. However, it can react with strong acids, so it should not be used with sulfuric acid. A better choice for a dehydrating agent in this reaction would be magnesium sulfate.
