Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

So im making methyl cinnamate from cinnamic acid and methanol using sulfuric acid as the catalyst. you suggested calcium chloride as a good replacement dehydrator. would calcium chloride react to any of the chemicals in the vial? i dont have magnesium sulfate.

Accepted Answer

Calcium chloride should not react with any of the other chemicals present in your reaction vial (methyl cinnamate, cinnamic acid, methanol, sulfuric acid). It will act as a dehydrating agent by removing water from the reaction mixture, thereby driving the equilibrium towards product formation.
