Frequently Asked Question

Questions asked by users might not always be phrased in the clearest way.

When galactose is labeled with a 14c at C-4 and passes through glycolysis, where will the label be detected?

Accepted Answer

The 14C label will be detected in pyruvate. Galactose enters glycolysis after being converted to glucose-6-phosphate. The C-4 of galactose corresponds to the C-4 of glucose, which will eventually be oxidized to carbon dioxide in the conversion of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to pyruvate. The label will be present in both pyruvate molecules produced.
